臺南市推動垃圾分類有成，歷年評鑑屢屢得獎，大多數市民已習慣資源回收。但近來發現有民眾將回收物丟入一般垃圾，沒做分類回收。台南市政府環保局已加強垃圾強制分類稽查，提醒少數沒有垃圾分類民眾，屢勸不聽將依違反廢棄物清理法開罰 1200 元至 6000 元。

環保局統計，臺南市每天垃圾量約 879 噸，平均每位市民每天製造 0.47 公斤垃圾。去(107)年垃圾分類稽查採樣調查結果，未分類的垃圾包中平均夾帶 2 成的資源回收物，其中以廚餘及紙類最多。這些垃圾包若能確實垃圾分類，全市每天即可減少 176 公噸垃圾。
環保局重申，垃圾分為「一般垃圾」、「廚餘」及「資源回收物」三大類。「資源回收物」包含紙容器(鋁箔包、紙餐具)、塑膠容器(寶特瓶)、金屬容器(鐵、鋁罐)及玻璃容器等。另外舊衣服、電風扇、電池、玻璃容器、鍵盤、保麗龍及照明光源等 7 類也是資源回收物，但須另行分開交由清潔隊員回收。
臺南市政府以垃圾「零廢棄」為目標，環保局持續推動綠色生產、綠色消費、源頭減量、資源回收、再使用及再生利用，逐步達成垃圾全分類、零廢棄的目標。希望市民配合環保局政策，以不浪費資源及食物，包含不過度包裝、購買適量食物等綠色消費行為，減少製造垃圾並落實垃圾分類，共同為生活環境盡一份心力。
